Blanqueta
Variety originating from Muro de Alcoy (Alicante). There are some 18 000 ha in the Valencia region, almost equally distributed between Valencia (La Canal de Navarrés, Vall d'Albaida and La Costera) and Alicante (El Comtat, L'Alcoia and Alt Vinalopó). Minority in regions such as La Manchuela or even the upper Ebro valley. The name refers to the whitish colour of the fruit during veraison.
It is a variety that stands out for its high productivity and regularity. It enters into production early, with slow-ripening, staggered rooted fruit that is harvested early to avoid damage from frost, to which the tree is very sensitive, being resistant to frost. It is highly resistant to detachment, which makes mechanised harvesting difficult.
It is characterised by a high fat content and has a good yield in the oil mill. The optimum time for harvesting is in the first fortnight of December, when yield, composition and stability are combined.
Blanqueta oil is characterised by a low oleic acid content, which, depending on the soil and climate of the producing area, can be less than 60%, and a high linoleic acid content, which can exceed 20%. Oleic acid percentages of up to 67% have been obtained in Castalla and 65% in Enguera, while in Lluxent values of around 58% have been obtained and it is therefore in this area where the linoleic acid content exceeds 20%.
This marked difference in composition depending on the production area is also evident in the polyphenol content and in the oxidative stability of the oils: those from Castalla have a polyphenol content of over 400 mg/kg while those from Lluxent do not reach 200 mg/kg. In general, the oils from Blanqueta are characterised by low stability, but the oils from Castalla are more stable, reaching a medium stability (approx. 36 hours), while those from Lluxent have a lower stability (approx. 16 hours).
