Trás-os-Montes PDO Olive Oil is produced in the Transmontana region, mainly concentrated in the so-called "Terra Quente", in the municipalities of Mirandela, Vila Flor, Alfândega da Fé, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Carrazeda de Ansiães and some parishes in the municipalities of Valpaços, Murça, Moncorvo, Mogadouro, Vimioso and Bragança.
History
Olive oil consumption in Trás-os-Montes dates back to ancient times. The planting of olive groves in Mirandela dates back to the first half of the 16th century. In 1896 there were already 12 olive mills in the village of Mirandela. In 1903, olive oil from this region won the silver medal at the Agricultural Exhibition.
The olive growers of Trás-os-Montes have been among the most careful in the cultivation of the olive tree and the manual harvesting of the olives in the best possible conditions. In the "Terra Quente" of Trás-os-Montes, because of its yield, the olive tree is still considered a sacred tree.
Varieties
Extra virgin olive oil and virgin olive oil produced from the olive varieties Verdeal transmontana, Madural, Cobrançosa, Cordovil and others.
The oils are produced from the varieties Verdeal, Madural, Cobrançosa, Negrinha do Freixo in DOP Trás-os-Montes.
