Koroneiki
The Koroneiki is a variety of olive tree and olive from Greece.
It is cultivated mainly in the north of Crete and in the south-west of the Peloponnese, occupying between 50 and 60 % of the olive-growing area of the country.
The Koroneiki variety of the olive species is very resistant to arid soils, although it is not very tolerant to low temperatures.
For this reason, it has spread successfully along the Mediterranean coasts and is not recommended above 400 m altitude.
It is currently being planted in many other countries due to its good adaptation to super-intensive cultivation. Its cultivation spread in Spain, especially in the Mediterranean arc around 2009, although it has not yet overtaken the arbequina in super-intensive cultivation.
This olive variety is early maturing about two weeks after arbequina and has a good yield, in some areas it reaches yields between 18-20%. One of the highest yielding olives.
It should also be noted that they are cold-resistant trees, they adapt to hedgerow or super-intensive plantations and with little alternate bearing, i.e. they have a constant production over the years. Although it is quite productive, it is not among the most productive olive trees.
The fruit is more oval than normal and has little pulp, which is why it is mainly used for oil production and not for commercial olives.
