The Denominations of Origin in the Ebro area are DO Aceite de La Rioja in the upper area of the river passing through various Autonomous Communities such as La Rioja, Navarra with the DO Aceite de Navarra with the DO Aceite Sierra de Moncayo and DO Aceite del Bajo Aragón in the lower area of the river.
Aragon dedicates around 45,000 ha to olive cultivation and produces 17,500 tonnes of oil, of which 12,000 tonnes are classified as Extra Virgin. It is the sixth largest producer in Spain.
The varieties of olives most commonly used in the Ebro area to produce olive oil:
Autochthonous Redondilla, Machona and Royuela, plus Arbequina in the DO Aceite de La Rioja.
Arróniz, Arbequina or Empeltre in the DO Aceite de Navarra.
Empeltre and Arbequina, but also with the Negral, Royal and Verdial varieties in the Sierra de Moncayo DO.
Empeltre must make up a minimum of 80% and the Arbequina and Royal varieties no more than 20% in the DO Aceite del Bajo Aragón.
